I’m not from a Romantic culture

Let’s face it—

Stiff upper lip and all that

Early on, that Italian dinner with candles

and food drowned in olive oil

Thought to win me over

Heart on sleeve

A sign of weakness where I come from

Your phrases of endearment—

Words, the least expensive currency—

Devalued by being spoken

Just a little said is enough

Like the long silences in a Bergman movie

The pause before the Resurrection

The breath of a new born

Like a tree your limbs

stretch far,

Take us out of

our bodies,

Further into

our bodies

Blood finds its way

home

Without argument

or regret

Enough said

Marc Frazier has published in over a hundred forty journals. A recipient of an Illinois Arts Council Award for poetry, he has also been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes and two “Best of the Nets.” His four books are available online. His latest poetry book If It Comes To That recently won Silver in the Florida Writers Association Royal Palm Literary Awards contest.
