Artist Interview: Jonny Detiger

Jonny Detiger’s works and designs transcend the mundane, celebrate life, and joyfully bridge the gap between the everyday and the sublime. His signature style of intricate line art and mixed media sculpture takes us on an exploration of human interaction through a kaleidoscope of iconic imagery, color and text. Happiness, humor and positivity are common themes that run through all of his work.
Jonny's piece, "Loungers," was published by MoonLit Getaway in October 2024.
INTERVIEW
MG: What got you into art?
JG: I have a very international background and this exposure to multiple cultures and disciplines—combined with a passion for art, fashion, design, architecture, and music—have always been a significant part of my creative development. My artistic output moves freely between all these disciplines as long as it invokes positive feelings.
MG: Tell us more about Loungers—what inspired it? What makes it unique?
JG: I love to explore human interaction through a kaleidoscope of iconic imagery, text, color, and light. In this work in particular, I like to express two people’s subliminal thought processes and personalities and how they interact with each other in a playful and positive way. In my work, I also love duality; something that has a certain look and feel from afar, but, as you move closer, all the details and intricacies reveal themselves.
MG: Are you currently working on anything else?
JG: A lot of my work is inspired by music and I am currently concentrating on that through paintings and a walk-in installation with light and sound. I believe in the healing power of art and in this work I want to explore this deeper through this motion activated sound and light “Disco for One” walk in sculpture.
MG: What’s your favorite piece you’ve ever made? Why is it your favorite?
JG: I have this sound piece called “Love Shower” which consists of a futuristic globe and a sound speaker seat. If you sit on the chair it plays a loop of Donna Summer’s “Love to love you, baby” and you get showered by bubbles that are infused by a special flower scent from Hawaii that local lore says induces happiness. Whenever someone is in a bad mood, this positivity bolt will lift their spirits in a fun and uplifting way. Plus, it looks super cool visually.
MG: Are there any artists who inspire the way you make your pieces?
JG: I don’t have a specific piece or artist I feel particularly inspired by. For me, how a work makes you feel has always been more important than what it looks like or who it’s by. This takes on many forms and shapes, but any work that has that positive effect on me I love and am inspired by.
MG: Do you have any social media you’d like to share?
JG: Yes, you can find me on Instagram, TikTok etc as @jonnydetiger
I also have a new web shop inspired by some of my artwork that I just opened at www.jonnysfunkshop.com
MG: Do you have any advice for other artists?
JG: Just do you and don’t get distracted by what everybody else thinks or says.
